A backyard track eliminates the drive to the hobby shop and gives unlimited practice time. A basic track can be built in a weekend.
01 Choosing the Location
A flat area of at least 20 by 30 feet gives enough space for a 1/10 scale track. Dirt surfaces are easier to shape and maintain than grass.
02 Planning the Layout
Start with a simple oval and add complexity. Include at least one tight hairpin, one sweeping curve, and one straight. Place the driving position where you can see the entire track.
03 Track Surface Preparation
Remove grass and weeds. Compact the dirt with a lawn roller. Level major bumps. Water lightly before driving to compact the surface and reduce dust.
04 Barriers and Track Markers
PVC pipes cut to 12-inch lengths are cheap, durable, and gentle on cars. Pool noodles cut in half absorb impact. Secure with landscape staples.
05 Jumps and Features
A tabletop jump: packed dirt ramp with a flat top and gentle landing slope. Start at four inches high. A rhythm section of three to four small bumps adds technical challenge.
06 Maintenance
Water before each session. Rake ruts and fill holes regularly. Rotate the layout every few months for freshness.
07 Lighting
Two 50-watt LED floodlights on tall stakes illuminate a 30x30-foot area for night sessions.
